The device is part of the measurement
An online reaction test does not observe the brain directly. It records when the browser displays a signal and when an input event arrives. A mouse click, trackpad press and touchscreen tap each travel through different hardware and software paths.
Research finds input differences
Studies of online behavioural tasks have reported reaction-time differences across input devices. One recent study found shorter responses for mouse users than trackpad users in its task. Other research has found that cognitive-test scores can vary by personal digital device and input type.
Touch has different trade-offs
A touchscreen lets the user respond directly on the display, but touch processing and display latency can vary by device. A mouse may have its own switch and polling delay. Neither input is universally “better” for every test; they are simply not interchangeable.
