The visual environment contains more information than can be processed equally at once. Selective attention prioritizes representations that match current goals, such as finding a target shape while ignoring irrelevant objects.

Targets and distractors compete

Attention can enhance relevant signals and reduce the influence of distractors. Salient or target-like distractors may still capture attention, especially when they share features with what a person is looking for.

Errors reveal different problems
